MUSIC MAGAZINE ANALYSIS The wire - May 2020 Issue 435 https://www.thewire.co.uk/issues/435 -The majority of this magazine cover contains dark cool colours, the title is written in bold blue writing which stands out against the dark back ground, highlighting its importance. -The writing under the title says "adventures in time and music" "independent since 1982" this establishes the magazines position and highlights their "authority" and ability to report on music. -The main image of Diamanda Galás takes up the whole front cover, she is seen looking quite serious which we can see from her facial expression. -The picture seems to have been taken from out side a window as we can see the glare of the glass and the sky outside, the links to the copy underneath her name which reads "Through a glass darkly" CONTEXT The covid-19 pandemic has lead to England being on lockdown from the 23rd of March - one of the key stories featured on the fron
MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS Jhene Aiko - While we’re young https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LjvwRSKVQNs The music video for Jhene Aiko’s While we’re young presents a young woman who suffers from short term memory loss, a man who she meets at a coffee shop every morning and inevitably forgets by the next day 'woos' her everyday The video starts in the coffee shop where we meet both the man and woman individually for the first time, before they speak we already learn about the woman’s condition. The use of bright pastel colours creates a sense of positivity and optimism.                                   The music video can be seen as montage, often romantic, there is clips which are taken on phones making the video look more authentic such as the one above. The use of different types of clips and such a large number of them creates a sense of time passing.  However the positivity is naive considering the consideration of the woman and therefore the reality is shown..
MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS Alessia Cara - Not Today https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0jMPXRDYpkQ The music video begins with a close up shot of the artist herself. She is seen with smudged makeup and quite messy hair with a vacant look on her face. Her appearance however contrasts wit her surroundings which quite bright and colourful. As we zoom out we see that she is wearing a full grey suit which seems to be quite big on her and is quite scruffy which you can see from the tie. Again the background seems to be well lit and has alot of bright colours , the song is about being happy in the future and perhaps the way the house is furnished and lit could represent hope. As the video continues we see her taking on day to day activities feeling this same emotion which we can assume from the smudged makeup, she is trying to live her life day to day, trying to feel happy.    Throughout the video we can see her visibly sad and showing her true emotions however the colou
MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS Adele - Make you feel my love https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0put0_a--Ng The video starts with a shot of the city which then focuses on one specific apartment which is when we see the artist. The camera zooms into the room slightly then cuts to the next scene.  The video contains many different angles of the artist however the majority of the video is filmed as a close up shot and is mostly performance. This allows us to see and experience more realistic emotions as we are forced to see the artist. The use of so many different angles creates a sense of time which is the main aim of the video, the dark cool colours also create a sad tone. The close up shots of the phone give us a clearer understanding of the time that is passing and as an audience we know what is happening. The facial expressions add to the sad atmosphere of the video along with the dark clothes. There is a clear cyclical narrative in which the video ends in a similar way
MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS King Krule - Biscuit Town (XL Recordings) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=P3AUU-VM4Io The music video starts with shots of a cardboard town, we see tall buildings with windows lit. All the buildings seem to look the same, the song is supposed to represent the artists mind which he calls biscuit town, perhaps he is highlighting his own repetitive nature. We then see directly into one specific window where we see a man  drinking and we can assume he is drinking alcohol however the lyrics tell us that he is drinking 'soda' however this contrasts with the bottle. The video is filmed from the perception of someone walking through "Biscuit Town" (a term often used to describe the town of Bermondsey in London which may have formed part of the inspiration for Krule)  as he looks up Krule sees a woman swimming in the moonlight. As the video goes on Krule is seen in a redlit bar speaking about a female which seems to be a recurring top
